Plumbing Firm's Warning To Homeowners This Winter

Plumbing Firm's Warning To Homeowners This Winter

According to the Met Office, temperatures are expected to drop to as low as -14C throughout the winter period and into the New Year, in what is being described as Britain’s worst cold snap in 144 years.

The Ascot-based firm is already anticipating an increase in the number of call outs, in what is traditionally a busy time for the company. In light of the severe weather warning, Alex Mayer, the firm’s managing director, is advising people to ensure that their boilers are in full working condition to guard against any costly, and potentially life threatening, issues.

Alex said: “Throughout the winter period, temperatures can drop to extremely low levels and with the reported adverse weather on the way, the last thing any family needs is a problem with their boiler system, especially during the holiday season.

“Carbon monoxide poisoning is also a prevalent issue with thousands of people across the country affected, due to outdated or unsafe boilers. It really is the silent killer, so it is vital that these appliances are checked and serviced regularly, to guard against its highly poisonous nature.”

According to statistics from the Chartered Institute of Housing, as part of its Gas Safety Week initiative, 23 million households in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey use gas in the home. However, 43% of Britons fail to check their appliances annually and 10% own gas appliances, which have never been checked.

Alex added: “In excess of 20 million homes across the UK use gas for heating and cooking in the home, so it is essential that these appliances are working correctly. Having a check now, reduces the chances of it becoming a bigger problem and having to face an emergency call out during the hectic winter break.

“A standard boiler service can help identify any potential issues and improve its efficiency, not to mention putting your mind at ease, as well as, potentially, saving yours and your family’s life.”
