6 Ways Your Home May Be Making You Feel Unwell

Our health is something we should all worry about, but you may be surprised to know that your home could be a key factor in making you ill. While you shouldn’t get obsessed with your cleaning by bleaching everything in sight, there are still areas within your home that need your regular attention.

The following are some the ways your home may make you feel unwell.

Heating systems

It’s common sense to know that your home needs to be kept warm; otherwise, you are prone to many infections and health problems. You need a decent heating system, such as the high-quality radiators provided by Warmehaus. Every room in the house needs to be kept warm, even those you are not using. Going from a warm room to a cold one can affect those with a history of cold-related disorders, such as runny noses and muscular pains, so regulate the temperature.

Poor ventilation

Poor ventilation can lead to indoor air problems. This can lead to long term health issues, such as asthma and the development of allergies. A dehumidifier will help to keep the air moist in rooms with limited ventilation, but you should aim to open the windows as often as possible, to allow air to filter through and prevent condensation and mould from settling in.

Bed sheets

Bed bugs do exist, and they are more commonly known as dust mites. These pesky swines thrive in warm and humid rooms, so again, ventilation is important. Dust mites don’t bite, but they can play havoc with your allergies and cause hay fever. They feed on your skin and linger on the flakes you leave behind in your bed and other furniture. So don’t sleep in the nude, change your bed sheets regularly, and vacuum everywhere.

Bath mats

You might get into the bath or shower and clean yourself thoroughly, but the humble bath mat you stand on with your wet feet is a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and those dastardly dust mites. This can lead to the common cold and aggravate allergies, so wash the mat a couple of times a month, and be sure to dry yourself thoroughly before stepping on it.

Cleaning products

Cleaning products may smell fresh and lemony, but many of them contain chemicals that can cause skin irritations. Toxic fumes can also affect your respiratory system and damage your liver and kidney if ingested. When you use them, ensure the room is ventilated, use rubber gloves, and dilute the cleaning product with water. You could also do yourself, and the environment a favour, and use an eco-friendly product instead.

Blenders

Blenders are great for healthy soups and fruit smoothies, but if you don’t clean them out after use, you are risking your health. The leftover residue can breed bacteria, such as salmonella and E coli, and will cause you bowel problems and abdominal pains. Therefore, make it a habit to rinse the blender out with water and let it dry before storing it away.

Bottom line

We hope we haven’t made you paranoid, but remember, taking care of your house will also take care of your health.
